The Materials Recovery Department (MRD) of the SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), has made significant contributions to both revenue generation and sustainability initiatives during the financial year 2024-25. Through efficient disposal and recycling operations, MRD has played a pivotal role in supporting green steelmaking and optimizing resource utilization.
In FY 2024-25, MRD successfully disposed of approximately 8.6 lakh tons of ‘BOF slag with waste’ to external agencies. This initiative not only ensured the sustainable handling of by-products but also generated an impressive revenue of about Rs. 30 Crores. The disposal process aids in reducing environmental load and enhances the plant’s sustainability footprint.
MRD also dispatched around 2,300 tons of “used/rejected refractory bricks with waste” to approved agencies, contributing further to waste reduction efforts. This activity brought in additional revenue of Rs. 1.22 Crores, underlining MRD’s focus on resource recovery and circular economy principles.
Beyond revenue, MRD has been instrumental in providing valuable scrap materials to SMS-1 and SMS-2 (Steel Melting Shops), supporting efficient and cost-effective steel production. These efforts contribute significantly to RSP’s ongoing mission of sustainable steelmaking.
The strategic initiatives of MRD not only reinforce RSP’s commitment to environmental stewardship but also demonstrate the potential of resource recovery as a key driver of operational efficiency and economic value.
