NEW DELHI. Amitabh Kant on Monday announced his decision to step down as India’s G20 Sherpa, marking the end of a remarkable 45-year journey in government service.
In a social media post titled “My New Journey”, Kant expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for the opportunity to serve in key roles, including CEO of NITI Aayog and Secretary of the Department for Industrial Policy and Promotion. He called his leadership of India’s G20 Presidency in 2023 a “significant milestone”, highlighting its inclusive and people-centric nature, promotion of cooperative federalism, and the historic inclusion of the African Union in the G20.
Reflecting on his legacy, Kant noted that he spearheaded transformative initiatives such as the Aspirational Districts Programme, the Atal Innovation Mission, and key policy reforms like PLI schemes and the Green Hydrogen Mission.
As Secretary, he was instrumental in launching landmark initiatives like Ease of Doing Business, Make in India, and Startup India. Looking ahead, he said he now hopes to contribute to India’s journey toward Viksit Bharat by supporting startups, think tanks, academic institutions, and free enterprise, drawing on grassroots lessons from his early days in Kerala and his work on the acclaimed Incredible India campaign.
