Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi on Monday joined a protest at India Gate in New Delhi over the police action against students of the Jamia Millia Islamia. senior Congress leaders KC Venugopal, AK Antony, PL Punia and Ahmed Patel, as well as other workers also joined later .

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said violent protests across the country against amendments to the Citizenship Act were “deeply distressing” and not in line with “our ethos”. “I want to unequivocally assure my fellow Indians that CAA [Citizenship Amendment Act] does not affect any citizen of India of any religion,” he added.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday warned of “jihadists, Maoists and separatists” infiltrating student protests in New Delhi against the amended law. She said she did not know what happened at Jamia Millia Islamia University in Delhi on Sunday night.

Meanwhile The Supreme Court agreed to hear petitions challenging the act on Wednesday. At least a dozen petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the new law.

Protests were reported from parts of West Bengal as the Trinamool Congress planned a day of protests against the amended citizenship law. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has hit the streets in Kolkata. The Bharatiya Janata Party, meanwhile, has announced a nationwide campaign to spread awareness about the legislation and claimed that it was not discriminatory against Muslims.

Another group of students have formed a human chain to resume peaceful protests against the politically contentious Citizenship Amendment Act.
