The Second Batch of 30 local youth from industrial slums and peripheral areas of Rourkela have been successfully trained in the trade of ‘Assistant Mason for Refractories’ as part of a skill development initiative under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP).
The training programme held at the Livelihood Business Incubation Centre, Sector-15, Rourkela was conducted as part of a tripartite collaboration between NSIC, NSTFDC, and SAIL, RSP. Developed at a cost of Rs. 5.00 lakhs per batch, the initiative is a key component of RSP’s Employability Enhancement efforts, focusing on creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for underserved communities.
The training was designed to provide both theoretical knowledge and practical exposure, the training equipped the participants with essential skills in refractory masonry — a critical area in steel plant and industrial operations. The curriculum covered handling of refractory materials, proper use of tools, safety procedures and an introduction to basic steel plant functions. The training ensures that participants are industry-ready and capable of contributing effectively to the growing demand for skilled manpower in the refractory sector.
Beyond skills training, the initiative is expected to have a broader socio-economic impact by opening up employment avenues, strengthening the local industrial workforce, and fostering inclusive development in the region.
The 30-day long training programme, aimed at enhancing employability, concluded on 15th April. Mr. S S Roychoudhury, CGM (Maintenance) presided over the concluding function and handed over the certificates to the trainees for successful completion of the training programme. He highlighted the significance of the training program which provides valuable employment opportunities and can help boost local industry capabilities.
