NEW DELHI. In a notable acknowledgment of the Coal Ministry’s efforts to modernize and digitize the mining sector, South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited under the Ministry of Coal, presented its flagship digital transformation initiative, DigiCOAL, at the National Workshop on “Digital Initiatives for Increasing Transparency in Governance” held at the SCOPE Convention Centre in New Delhi on 11 February 2026. This national platform highlighted the Ministry’s strategic focus on promoting transparency, accountability, and technology-driven reforms in the coal and mining industry. DigiCOAL exemplifies the government’s vision to create a more efficient, data-centric, and digitally integrated mining ecosystem, aligning with the broader goals of transparent governance and responsible resource management.
DigiCOAL is a comprehensive digital ecosystem designed to enhance operational oversight and institutional accountability across mining activities through advanced technological integration. Key features include real-time monitoring of heavy earth-moving machinery using sensor-based systems to detect anomalies and improve operational efficiency, video analytics and connected worker systems to enhance safety and operational control, drone-based surveillance for precise mine monitoring and regulation enforcement, data-driven mine planning using analytics for scientific production management, and integrated digital platforms for land records, training, spare parts management, and centralized decision-making. The recognition of DigiCOAL at the national workshop underscores how policy guidance from the Ministry of Coal, combined with technological adoption at the operational level, is transforming the mining sector into a more transparent, efficient, and future-ready industry committed to sustainable development and responsible energy production.
