DMRC to get first 'Make in India' driverless metro trainset

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has achieved a significant milestone under the ‘Make in India’ initiative with the arrival of its first metro train set equipped with driverless technology. This marks DMRC’s first project outsourced to an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM).

The train set, dispatched from Alstom’s facility in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh, is part of the broader Phase 4 expansion, which will enhance eco-friendly and convenient travel for metro passengers. The trains, featuring Grade of Automation (GOA) 4 driverless technology, are designed to reach speeds of up to 95 kmph, serving three lines, including the new Gold Line 10, covering 64.67 kilometers.

The €312 million project includes a 15-year maintenance contract, making it DMRC’s first outsourced project of this kind. Alstom will deliver 52 six-car train sets for the Phase 4 corridors, with the first now ready for operation.

DMRC Managing Director Vikas Kumar highlighted the importance of this achievement, while Alstom’s Managing Director, Olivier Loison, emphasized their commitment to sustainable urban transit solutions in India. This development strengthens the partnership between Alstom and DMRC and represents a significant leap in India’s infrastructure and self-reliance initiatives.
