In an industry often dominated by men, the women of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) are proving that gender is no barrier to excellence. This Women’s Day, we celebrate the dedicated women working in the Automation and Instrumentation Department, whose expertise and contributions have enhanced operational efficiency, cost savings, and technological advancements across the plant.
It was thrilling to witness the women at work, their eyes focused with determination as they skillfully repaired Optical Emission Spectrometer (OES) Machines of RCL and CCM, Temperature Scanners for Sintering Plant-1, and Photo Master Sensing Devices of Hot Strip Mill – 2. With steady hands and precise movements, they delicately handled intricate circuits and components, their fingers expertly tracing connections, diagnosing issues, and restoring vital equipment to perfect working condition. Their passion and expertise were evident in every meticulous adjustment, embodying the spirit of dedication and excellence in their craft.
Notably, out of the 8 employees deployed in the Automation Lab, 5 are women, including Ms. Vijaya Laxmi Sahoo, a Senior Electronics Technician who is the Lab In-charge. She joined RSP in 1999 and rising through the ranks, she became the Repair Lab In-charge in 2022. She oversees a vast array of electronic components, from PLC cards and drive cards to varied control systems used across the plant and beyond, including Gua Mines and MEL. While beautifully executing her role she not only ensures the smooth functioning of crucial systems but also mentors newcomers. “Guiding newcomers and sharing my knowledge gives me immense satisfaction. It’s rewarding to see them grow and contribute effectively,” says Ms. Sahoo.
Working alongside her are, Ms. Nirmala Majhi, Ms. Jharna Amat and Ms. Susmita Majhi, whose expertise help in ensuring the accuracy and reliability of metallurgical testing, monitoring temperature fluctuations, maintaining process stability and many more.
“It’s quite interesting to work with electronics. I enjoy my job and feel proud to balance my work and home responsibilities,” says Ms. Chamari Oraon, Senior Technician of Instrumentation Department who began her journey at RSP as an apprentice after completing her ITI in Electronics from Government ITI, Panposh and later became a regular employee in 2000.
Technician Ms. Promila Lakra, who joined RSP in 2011, takes care of repair of Carbon Oxide Monitors, which measure carbon monoxide levels throughout the plant, an essential safety device for workers and equipment. “Knowing that my work contributes to workplace safety motivates me every day,” she says.
New to the Instrumentation team, Ms. Kalyani Raj, who joined just seven months ago as an ACT, is currently working on repairing and maintaining Pressure Gauges. Expressing her excitement, she says, “I feel proud to be part of a Maharatna company like SAIL and contribute to its success.”
The contributions of these women go beyond technical expertise; they are problem-solvers and innovators ensuring the seamless operation of critical steel plant processes. Their commitment to excellence, cost-saving contributions, and skill enhancement has significantly improved the efficiency and reputation of their departments. RSP proudly celebrates their strength, skill, and perseverance, proving that women are an indispensable force in the steel industry.
