Repositioning Gas-Based Power in India’s Decarbonising Energy Future

In a strategic effort to shape India’s clean energy trajectory, World Energy Council India (WEC India), in collaboration with the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF), organized a high-level stakeholder consultation titled “Gas-Based Power in India.” The virtual session examined the vital role of gas-based generation as a flexible, cleaner alternative to support round-the-clock (RTC) power, while integrating renewable energy sources and energy storage solutions.

India’s ambition to achieve a 15% share of natural gas in its energy mix by 2030 has become a national priority, positioning gas as a key enabler in the country’s transition towards net-zero emissions. The session was chaired by Ms. Sangeeta Kaushik, ED-WEC India, and Mr. Subhash Kumar, former CMD of ONGC. It featured participation from prominent industry leaders including NTPC, Shell, ExxonMobil, British Petroleum (BP), Xcoal, and GAIL, with Deloitte serving as the knowledge partner.

Key discussion points included the role of gas-based power as a transition enabler, revival strategies for stranded assets, reforms needed in pricing and Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), and the potential for synergy with renewable energy and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). Policy and regulatory frameworks to unlock the commercial viability of gas-based power were also a focus. A comprehensive report by WEC India, capturing insights and recommendations from the consultation, will be published soon, offering strategic guidance for India’s clean energy future.
