Meanwhile union minister ARVIND SAWANT will resign from cabinet. Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshiyari on Sunday invited the Shiv Sena to form the government after the BJP, the single largest party in the state legislature, declined the Governor’s invitation to form the government.
The invitation has been extended to Eknath Shinde, leader of the Shiv Sena in the state legislature. The Sena is the second largest party in the Maharashtra Assembly after the BJP.
Shiv Sena leaders say they have received the support of the Nationalist Congress Party and the Congress party to form the government in Maharashtra.
While the NCP has agreed to join the coalition with the Shiv Sena, the Congress is still in two minds with a section of party demanding that it extend outside support to the coalition but stay out of the government. “We are still discussing all options,” former Congress Chief Minister Ashok Chavan told reporters late this evening.
“The next chief minister of Maharashtra will come from the Shiv Sena,” Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray told the legislators hours before Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis declined the Governor’s invitation to the BJP.
Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut told reporters that his party did not have any enmity with the Congress party.
“The Congress is not the enemy of the people. All parties have differences in ideology and various issues,” Raut said.
Earlier today, the core committee of the BJP’s state unit at a meeting concluded that it would not be able to get the support of the Shiv Sena to form the government under the leadership of incumbent Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
