ECI Directs 17 States and UTs to Conduct Special Summary Revision of Electoral Rolls for 2027

ECI Special Summary Revision of electoral rolls 2027

NEW DELHI. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed 17 States and Union Territories to undertake a Special Summary Revision (SSR) of electoral rolls, with January 1, 2027, as the qualifying date. The exercise will cover Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Puducherry, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and West Bengal. The Commission said it had earlier issued instructions on September 29 to conduct a special drive to enrol eligible citizens who may have been left out, particularly young and first-time voters. Schedules for States and UTs where the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is underway or has recently concluded will be announced separately. The timetable for Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh will also be notified in due course.

The ECI has directed Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) to ensure that no eligible citizen is left out and no ineligible person is included in the electoral rolls. Chief Electoral Officers, District Election Officers and EROs will oversee the enrolment process. As the exercise is a summary revision, Booth Level Officers will not conduct house-to-house visits. To facilitate wider participation, prospective electors eligible on January 1, April 1, July 1 and October 1, 2027, may submit advance applications for enrolment. District-level help desks will also be established to assist eligible voters, particularly migrants and people from vulnerable and marginalised communities. PIB
