Delhi Metro World Public Transport Day 2026 celebration

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) proudly observed World Public Transport Day 2026, in line with the global mandate received from the International Association of Public Transport (UITP). UITP, founded in 1885, is a worldwide body dedicated to shaping policy and raising awareness about the importance of public transport.

On this occasion, DMRC’s Managing Director Dr. Vikas Kumar and Dr. Shalini Singh, President, DMRC Ladies Welfare Organisation, along with other senior officials were present. Ms. Rupa Nandy, Head of UITP, India, also graced the event.

To observe the occasion, DMRC organized a special train ride for about 100 children from the NGO Jan Parivartan. This initiative helped the young participants understand the benefits of public transport and encouraged them to adopt sustainable travel habits. Following the train ride, the children gathered at Metro Bhawan to take part in a drawing competition on the theme “Public Transport for a Better Tomorrow.” The competition inspired creativity while reinforcing the importance of environmentally friendly commuting options.

Adding to the vibrancy of the occasion, college students from Jesus and Mary College and Lady Hardinge Medical College performed street plays in front of these young children, highlighting the importance of public transport. Their performances served as a dynamic medium to engage the children directly and reinforce the message of sustainable travel in an interactive and memorable way.

In addition, digital banners were displayed across metro stations. These banners emphasized the importance of public transport and reminded commuters of their role in reducing congestion, pollution, and carbon emissions. Announcements regarding the same are also being made at all metro stations this week.

Through these initiatives, DMRC reaffirmed its commitment to supporting UITP’s vision of a better tomorrow. By engaging children, students, and commuters alike, the day inspired citizens to embrace public transport as a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable mode of travel.
