NCRTC Launches Solar-on-Track System at Namo Bharat Depot

The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has introduced the Solar-on-Track system at the Namo Bharat Depot in Duhai, Ghaziabad—an innovation that converts an unused 70-metre track section into an energy-generating asset. Equipped with 28 high-efficiency solar panels, the system will produce around 17,500 units of power annually and contribute to essential station functions such as lighting and signalling, all without requiring additional land.

This initiative is part of NCRTC’s larger solar strategy to meet 70% of its energy needs from renewable sources. The corporation already operates 5.5 MW of rooftop solar installations and is progressing toward a 15 MW peak generation target. With Duhai becoming the second Indian location to adopt this system after Varanasi, officials believe the Solar-on-Track model could be replicated across metro and rapid rail networks nationwide. Trial runs of the installation have been completed, and final approval is awaited from authorities.
