NEW DELHI. India is observing the 12th National Handloom Day today to honour its rich weaving traditions, commemorating the historic launch of the Swadeshi Movement on August 7, 1905. Supporting over 35.22 lakh weavers and allied workers—more than 72 per cent of whom are women—the sector remains a vital cornerstone of rural livelihoods and women-led development. Backed by comprehensive welfare measures such as the e-Pehchan portal, Concessional Credit MUDRA loans, and the Raw Material Supply Scheme, the government continues to strengthen social security and market access for weaving communities. By blending traditional craftsmanship with modern design, digital technology, and GI-certified global outreach, India’s handloom industry is expanding its international footprint while preserving its timeless cultural legacy.
