The enterprising efforts of employees from Centralized Maintenance, Mechanical (CMM) have recently led to substantial cost savings for the plant while ensuring resource availability. A dedicated team from the CMM winch section, led by Junior Engineer Mr. JJ Padhi, successfully revamped and refurbished a critical, high-value 5-ton capacity winch using in-house resources.
In a motivational gesture, Mr. Padhi re-commissioned the refurbished winch on April 28 at the winch section. The event was graced by Mr. SP Patel, General Manager (Repair Construction Mechanical, CMM), along with other senior officers and department employees.
Notably, the winch, previously deemed beyond repair and lying defunct in the Coke Ovens department since its sourcing in 2000, has been fully restored. Damaged assemblies and the drum controller were replaced with an in-house Eldro brake assembly and panel control system. The existing drive motors and gearbox were repaired, and a new wire rope was installed. After rigorous load testing, the winch was declared fully operational.
This initiative averted significant cash outflow that would have been required to procure a new winch of similar capacity, exemplifying innovative resource management and technical excellence of the collective.
