KUDGI. NTPC has achieved a significant milestone in its pioneering 20 MW/160 MWh CO₂ Battery Project at Kudgi, marking a major advancement in Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) technology in India. The CO₂ external dome, standing 50 metres high, was successfully inflated during an operation that commenced at 19:30 hrs on 8th October 2026 and was completed successfully at 04:30 hrs on 9th October 2026.
The innovative CO₂ Battery technology offers several advantages, including long operational life, independence from critical minerals such as lithium and cobalt, minimal performance degradation over time, and enhanced energy security. With the successful completion of dome inflation, the project has crossed an important milestone. The commissioning of the 20 MW/160 MWh plant now becomes the next key target in realising this pioneering energy storage initiative.
