NEW DELHI. In a significant leadership development for the public sector insurance industry, the Government of India has appointed Hitesh Rameshchandra Joshi as the new Chairman-cum-Managing Director of the General Insurance Corporation of India. The appointment, approved by the Ministry of Finance, became effective on June 16, 2026, following a formal disclosure to the stock exchanges. Joshi will steer India’s premier reinsurance institution until September 30, 2028, or until further government orders.
Prior to this elevation, Joshi served as the Executive Director at GIC Re, where he managed a wide array of critical portfolios ranging from reinsurance operations, finance, and enterprise risk management to digital transformation, legal compliance, and human resources. He holds a postgraduate degree in Accountancy from Mumbai University, a master’s degree in financial management from the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, and is a recognized Fellow of the Insurance Institute of India.
