NEW DELHI. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for a major transmission project by Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID), a Maharatna CPSE under the Ministry of Power, Government of India, at Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu. This Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) project, implemented by POWERGRID Kudankulam Transmission Limited, aims to evacuate 2,000 MW of clean nuclear power from Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant Units 3 & 4 (2×1000 MW) to multiple beneficiary states and Union Territories including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Puducherry. The project includes construction of a 400 kV D/C (quad) Kudankulam NPP (3&4) – Tuticorin-II GIS PS transmission line and two 400 kV GIS line terminal bays at Tuticorin-II GIS.
The initiative supports India’s goal of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030 and contributes to a greener, more secure energy future. The foundation-laying ceremony witnessed the presence of several dignitaries, including Hon’ble Governor of Tamil Nadu Shri R. N. Ravi, Union Ministers Shri Rammohan Naidu Kinjarapu and Dr. L. Murugan, and Tamil Nadu Ministers Shri Thangam Thenarasu and Smt. P Geetha Jeevan, among others. As of 30th June 2025, POWERGRID has commissioned 284 substations, over 1,80,533 ckm of transmission lines, and 5,66,831 MVA of transformation capacity, maintaining a transmission system availability of over 99.84% through adoption of advanced technologies and digital automation.
