‘This is our World Cup’: Ben Stokes issues war cry after defeat to Australia

England all-rounder Ben Stokes promised no backward step for the must-win match against India on Sunday after the Three Lions faced their second consecutive defeat in World Cup 2019.

Ben Stokes confidently stated that ‘this is our World Cup’ although the pre-tournament favorites’ hopes of qualifying for the knock-outs were dealt a huge blow on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, Australia defeated England by 64 runs at Lord’s to become the first team to enter the semi-finals of the 2019 Cricket World Cup. After Aaron Finch smashed a classy 100, Jason Behrendorff picked 5 for 44 and Mitchell Starc finished with 4 for 43 as England failed to chase 286.

Stokes threatened to take the match away from Australia as he scored a well-placed 89 but Starc produced a lethal yorker to end his stay. After the loss, England skipper Eoin Morgan had admitted to being outplayed by Australia but insisted that hosts’ fate was in their own hands.

“Given the circumstances, it’s not hugely disappointing, our fate is in our own hands. Everything we need to turn around is quite simple, the basics have let us down, and hopefully, we will improve on them moving forward,” hoped Morgan.

With just 8 points from 7 games, England now need to win their remaining 2 games to stay in contention for a semis berth. England will next play India on June 30 before clashing against New Zealand on July 3 in their final league game.
