By Ramakant Chaudhary

Amidst the labyrinthine maze of Indian politics, Narendra Modi stands as a towering figure, not merely as a leader but as a squarely crafted brand. From his humble beginnings as a party worker to his ascension to the highest office in the country, Modi’s journey has been punctuated by strategic PR manoeuvres that have not only modified his image but have also struck a chord with the masses. The nuances of Modi’s masterful PR communication strategies have unambiguously cemented his brand identity. However, what truly sets Modi apart is his ability to connect with the masses on a personal level. His PR strategies go beyond mere slogans; they tap into the aspirations and sentiments of the Indian populace. Modi’s communication is not just about delivering speeches; it’s about telling a compelling story of hope, progress, and national pride.

Whether it’s “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas,” “Achhe Din,” “Pradhan Sevak,” “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao”, “Vocal for Local”, “Make in India”, “Double Engine Ki Sarkar,” “Teesri Baar Modi Sarkar, Abki Baar 400 Paar,” or “Modi Ki Guarantee,” PM Modi’s electoral campaign taglines have reverberated widely across the country. These slogans encapsulate the essence of his vision to serve the nation and effect revolutionary change in people’s lives.

Each tagline represents a strategic communication move, portraying Modi as a leader firmly rooted in the soil of India, committed to the welfare of its citizens. His adeptness in connecting and engaging with the masses through these slogans has left an indelible mark on the political landscape.

These taglines not only serve as rallying cries for his supporters but also convey a sense of assurance and promise to the electorate. They symbolize Modi’s steadfast dedication to governance, progress, and inclusivity, making them potent tools in his political arsenal. Through these taglines, PM Modi has effectively crafted a narrative that strikes chord with the aspirations and hopes of millions of Indians, cementing his position as a formidable leader on the national stage.

‘Mann Ki Baat’, an iconic radio program, serves as a significant channel of communication through which Prime Minister Modi has cultivated a trusted rapport with citizens. It has emerged as a cornerstone of communication between the government and the people of India. Through this platform, PM Modi addresses the nation, sharing his thoughts, ideas, and vision directly with the citizens. It serves as a bridge between the leadership and the public, building a sense of unity and understanding.

During the high-stakes 2019 election campaign, one of the standout PR exercises was Modi’s ‘non-political interview’ with Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar. This unconventional move, aimed at showcasing Modi’s softer and more relatable side, not only captured widespread attention but also struck a chord with diverse segments of the population. By leveraging the reach and appeal of popular culture, Modi effectively humanized his image, making him more approachable to the masses.

A cornerstone of Modi’s communication strategy has been his adept handling of reputation crises. Despite facing severe backlash over contentious policies such as demonetization and GST, as well as allegations of corruption in defense deals, Modi managed to weather the storm by strategically deploying PR narratives that countered negative publicity. Through carefully curated stories and messaging, Modi was able to deflect criticism and maintain his credibility among the electorate.

Another pivotal aspect of Modi’s brand evolution has been his image makeover. From his early days as a grassroots worker clad in Khadi to his MODI-fication into a statesman-like figure donning tailored suits, Modi’s sartorial choices have mirrored his political journey. The shift in his attire symbolizes not just a personal transformation but also a strategic rebranding aimed at projecting a modern and progressive image to both domestic and international audiences.

At the heart of Modi’s PR strategy lies his ability to deliver the right message at the right time. His speeches are carefully created to follow a narrative arc that resonates with the masses. By framing himself as the quintessential underdog hero who triumphs over adversity, Modi effectively taps into the collective aspirations and sentiments of the electorate, positioning himself as a beacon of hope and change.

During times of crisis, Modi’s Public Relations playbook emphasizes the importance of projecting his humane side and refraining from engaging in confrontational rhetoric. By adopting a measured and composed approach, Modi not only avoids escalating tensions but also projects an image of stability and leadership in the face of adversity. His calculated silence on contentious issues such as mob lynching, Manipur mayhem and unemployment figures has been instrumental in defusing potential controversies and maintaining his aura of authority.

Modi’s electoral successes can be attributed in large part to his ability to connect with the emotions of the Indian electorate. In the landmark 2014 elections, Modi tapped into the collective frustrations of the youth, farmers, Aam Aadmi, and businessmen, promising a brighter future with his slogan of ‘Achhe Din Aane Wale hai’. This message struck a chord with millions of disillusioned voters, propelling Modi to power with a resounding mandate.

Similarly, during the 2019 election campaign, Modi capitalized on the wave of nationalism following the Balakot air strikes, positioning himself as a strong and decisive leader capable of safeguarding the nation’s security interests. By tapping into the patriotic fervour of the electorate, Modi galvanized support and secured a landslide victory, further solidifying his image as a charismatic and visionary leader.

Whenever opposition parties launched personal attacks on Modi, they often found themselves backfiring, thanks to Modi’s strategic communication tactics that put his opponents on the defensive. One such instance was the “Chowkidar Chor Hai” slogan coined by the Congress to tarnish Modi’s image in light of the demonetisation and Rafale scam controversies. However, Modi turned the tables in his favour by launching the “Main Bhi Chowkidar” campaign, catching his opponents off guard and reaping substantial electoral benefits.

In another episode, during the 2014 elections, Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar made a disparaging remark suggesting that Modi, coming from humble beginnings, was unfit to be prime minister and could only sell tea at Congress gatherings. Responding swiftly, Modi’s team orchestrated the “Chai Pe Charcha” campaign, effectively putting Congress on the backfoot and showcasing Modi’s connection with the common people.

These instances underscore Modi’s adeptness at converting adversities into opportunities through strategic communication, ultimately bolstering his political stature and resonance with the masses.

Put simply, Narendra Modi’s political brand underlines the power of effective PR communication in shaping public perceptions and influencing electoral outcomes. His ability to adapt his messaging, connect with diverse audiences, and navigate through crises with finesse underscores the importance of strategic communication in modern politics. As Modi continues to chart his course on the turbulent seas of Indian politics, his brand stands as a shining example of effective leadership and communication in the digital age.

By Ramakant Chaudhary

As India gears up for the crucial Lok Sabha elections, the political landscape is ablaze with fervour over the anticipated “400 Paar” and other strategic manoeuvres in the dance of democracy. According to the recent India Today Mood of the Nation poll survey flashed on February 8, 2024, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is all set to secure a commanding victory with an estimated 335 seats. In contrast, the INDIA bloc, comprising a coalition of 27 Opposition parties, faces a challenging outlook, potentially encountering defeat if the elections were held today. This revelation underscores the intensity of political currents as the nation approaches this pivotal electoral milestone.

The poll survey indicates that the BJP-led NDA is poised to maintain its hold on power by securing 335 seats, comfortably surpassing the 272-seat threshold (543 strength of Parliament) required for government formation. However, despite its expected victory, the alliance is projected to experience a decrease of 18 seats. Meanwhile, the INDIA coalition emerges as the biggest gainer, poised to secure approximately 38.3 percent of the vote share in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha polls. The Congress party is anticipated to secure 19 percent of the vote share, while the BJP is likely to clinch 39.6 percent, according to media reports following the survey’s telecast.

The BJP is projected to secure 304 out of 543 seats, reaffirming its ability to independently command a simple majority. This surpasses its previous tally of 303 seats in 2019, demonstrating the party’s continued strength and electoral prowess. The Congress may become the second-largest party with 71 seats, marking an increase of 19 seats from the previous election. The remaining 168 seats will be secured by other entities, including regional parties and independents.

A Glance Over Survey Data:

NDA—335 seats; INDIA—166 seats; Others—42 seats.

BJP—304 seats; Congress—71 seats; Others—168 seats.

Projected Seats (If Lok Sabah Polls Were Held Today):

North (180 seats)

NDA—154 seats

INDIA—25 seats

Others—1 seat

South (132 seats)

NDA—27 seats

INDIA—76 seats

Others—29 seats

East (153 seats)

NDA—103 seats

INDIA—38 seats

Others—12 seats

West (78 seats)

NDA—51 seats

INDIA—27 seats

Others—0

North East (11 seats spanning 7 states)

NDA—8 seats

Congress—2 seats

Others—1 seat

The survey findings underscore the electorate’s inclination towards the BJP, driven by a combination of welfare initiatives and a compelling nationalistic narrative championed by the party. The BJP’s strategic fusion of social welfare programs and a resonant narrative centered on patriotism seems to have resonated deeply with the populace, influencing their voting preferences.

PM Modi’s legacy is defined by the construction of the Ram Mandir, acknowledged by 42 percent of respondents (during the survey conducted between December 15, 2023, and January 28, 2024), while 19 percent cite raising India’s global stature. The revocation of Article 370 is notable for 12 percent, and handling the Covid-19 pandemic is praised by 20 percent. Additionally, 17 percent consider the Ram temple consecration a major achievement, and 14 percent recognize maintaining a corruption-free image. Unemployment concerns 18 percent of respondents, while 24 percent see price rise as a major failure. Covid-19 management is viewed as a failure by 13 percent. Unemployment is the top issue for 26 percent of Indians, followed by price rise for 19%. Opinions on reducing corruption are divided, with 46 percent saying ‘Yes’ and 47 percent saying ‘No’

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares for a potential third term, his enduring influence on the nation’s political landscape continues to be profound and far-reaching. Widely regarded as a transformative figure in Indian politics, Modi has left an indelible mark on various aspects of governance, policy-making, and national discourse since assuming office in 2014.

Modi’s leadership style, characterized by a strong emphasis on economic development, national security, and cultural identity, has resonated deeply with a broad spectrum of the Indian populace. His ambitious initiatives, such as “Make in India,” “Digital India,” and “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan,” reflect his vision of a modern, prosperous, and self-reliant India.

Furthermore, Modi’s adept navigation of international relations has elevated India’s global standing, with significant diplomatic achievements and strategic partnerships forged with key nations across the world. His proactive engagement on the global stage, coupled with a robust foreign policy agenda, has bolstered India’s position as a prominent player in international affairs.

Moreover, Modi’s leadership has been characterized by a relentless focus on inclusive development, aimed at uplifting marginalized communities, empowering women, and bridging socio-economic disparities. Initiatives such as “Jan Dhan Yojana,” “Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana,” and “Ayushman Bharat” underscore his commitment to inclusive growth and social welfare.

As Modi embarks on a potential third term, his influence on the nation’s political trajectory remains formidable, with his leadership style, policy priorities, and vision for India poised to continue shaping the country’s future direction. However, with the evolving socio-political equations and the emergence of new challenges, the extent of Modi’s influence and the trajectory of his leadership will be closely watched and debated in the coming years.

Conversely, the opposition parties face a formidable challenge in presenting a cohesive front and providing a viable alternative leadership to Prime Minister Modi. The absence of a unified stance and a clear leadership alternative within the opposition ranks emerges as a significant obstacle hindering their electoral prospects. This lack of unity and coherent leadership strategy among the opposition parties may further diminish their ability to effectively counter the BJP’s electoral dominance and sway the electorate in their favour.

Karnataka Elections 2023: The Congress had promised that upon coming to power, it would provide 200 units of free power to light the homes in the state. Now it has come to power and is all ready to light the houses of all Kannaḍigarus. The KERC cost per unit of electricity is ₹9.12 per unit means, the electricity of Rs 1824 will be free for the next five years till the Congress government is in power.

Well for the Indian electorate, electricity has always been important– in terms of access, reliability & cost. It is always one of the subjects to pull the electorate towards the party promising free power to come to POWER.

The freebies culture just ahead of elections was started by late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, J Jayalalithaa. It was during her tenure that the freebie culture started with promises of free sarees, pressure cookers, television, and more. Nationwide political parties quickly adopted this, while free electricity units as a promise was started from Delhi, with Aam Aadmi Party founder Arvind Kejriwal promising free power (to certain units), free water, bus travel, and more to win the elections in 2015.

Now with several assembly elections scheduled this year, political parties are promising free power. But, we are oversubsidizing in most states, and doing it inefficiently. Offering free or subsidized electricity to ‘vote banks’ achieves the short-term goal of winning elections. In the long term, it erodes the financial viability of the electricity distribution sector. This is not a problem of DISCOM inefficiency but rather a problem of political expediency. Consumers in Delhi enjoy free electricity up to 200 units a month, which means several citizens get zero monthly bills. In Tamil Nadu, users get up to 100 units of free electricity consumption.

If an elected government wants to keep a poll promise of reduced or free electricity, it has to compensate the power distribution company for the difference. State governments either subsidize or take over the debt of Discoms. A case in point is the Ujjwal Discom Assurance Yojna (UDAY) scheme when state governments floated bonds to retire the debt of #DISCOMS

But what really happens in the majority of the cases is that power distribution companies incur massive losses. Discoms owed a total of Rs 1,15,904 crore to power generation firms in January 2021, according to portal PRAAPTI (Payment Ratification And Analysis in Power Procurement for bringing Transparency in Invoicing of Generators). In January 2022, the total overdue amount, which was not cleared even after 45 days of a grace period offered by generators, stood at Rs 1,01,357 crore as against Rs 99,650 crore in the same month a year ago. The overdue amount stood at Rs 99,981 crore in December 2021. Discoms in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and Tamil Nadu account for the major portion of dues to gencos, the data showed.

The manifesto announcements favored political parties with accumulated losses of 30 DISCOMS spread across 9 states accounting for over 60% of power demand are estimated at Rs 700 billion, for 2022 shows data from Crisil. India boasts that 40% of its power capacity is now based on renewables. But competition between political parties in election pledges has resulted in more and more states providing free electricity to domestic consumers. This subsidizes rather than taxes carbon.

Political parties in a sheer desperate attempt to regain lost national relevance, are choosing to follow in the footsteps of the Aam Aadmi Party and pledged free units of free energy to secure public loyalty and obedience prior to the election. In the recent elections in Karnataka where Congress came to power, it promised 200 units of free energy through its statewide campaign to brighten every house with
light calling the scheme ‘Gruha Jyothi Yojane’.

Political competition in freebies has already made agricultural power free in most states. Domestic power is going the same way. This undercuts the government’s green commitments. #power #india
#karnatakaelections #freebies #elections #karnatakaelections2023.

The Bihar assembly elections will be held in three phases from October 28, chief election commissioner Sunil Arora announced on Friday. Voting in the first phase will be held on October 28, the second phase will be on November 3 and the third phase will be on November 7. The counting of votes will be on November 10.

In the first phase, 71 seats will go to polls, 94 seats will be in phase-2 and 78 seats will go to polls in the third phase. Addressing the press conference, he said these will be perhaps the largest election anywhere in the world during Covid-19, and listed precautionary measures taken by the poll panel and authorities. Among the precautionary steps taken, Arora said that polling time will be increased by one hour and will now be from 7am to 6pm, except in areas affected by Maoist extremism, due to Covid-19.
BIHAR ASSEMBLY POLLS SCHEDULE:
– 1st Phase: 28 October, 71 Seats
– 2nd Phase: 3 November, 94 Seats
– 3rd Phase: 7 November, 78 Seats
– Counting: 10 November

The social media platforms are expected to make adequate arrangements to safeguard against misuse of their platforms & set up strict protocols to handle such issues as and when they arise,” Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora said.

To further decongest polling stations and allow more free movement of voters, polling time has been increased by 1 hour. It’ll be held from 7 am-6 pm, instead of 7 am-5 pm earlier. However, this will not be applicable to Left-wing affected areas,” CEC Sunil Arora said while addressing a press conference to announce the schedule for Bihar assembly polls.

“Covid-19 patients who’re quarantined will be able to cast their vote on the last day of poll, at their respective polling stations, under the supervision of health authorities. This is beside the option of postal facility already extended to them,” CEC Sunil Arora said.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray is ready to enter the Legislative Council unopposed after the Congress decided to withdraw one of its two candidates for elections to 9 seats .

“Now we have determined to area just one out of two nominees for the MLC elections, which implies the MVA (Maha Vikas Aghadi of Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress) could have 5 nominees for as many seats (out of the entire 9),” state Congress chief Balasaheb Thorat said .
The BJP has fielded 4 candidates.

Shiv Sena chief Sanjay Raut had earlier right this moment mentioned Mr Thackeray had conveyed that the election needs to be “unopposed”.

Mr Thackeray, who shouldn’t be a member of both homes of the state legislature, is without doubt one of the nominees for the election, which grew to become obligatory after phrases of the MLCs ended on April 24.
Congress has 44 MLAs. The nine seats fell vacant on April 24 after terms of the sitting MLCs ended.

Thackeray, who is not a member of either Houses of the state legislature, and incumbent deputy Chairperson of the Legislative Council Neelam Gorhe are the nominees of the Sena while Shashikant Shinde and Amol Mitkari are the candidates of the NCP.

“Uddhav Thackeray personally feels that the election for the 9 seats of the Legislative Council happen unopposed. He expects so as a result of he desires to dedicate most of his time to the continued combat in opposition to coronavirus,” Mr Raut advised reporters earlier right this moment.
