The Steel Melting Shop-2 (SMS-2) of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has created a major record on 2nd August 2026 by achieving 82 Converter Blows and producing 12,994 Tons of Crude Steel in a Single Day marking a remarkable milestone in operational excellence. This outstanding achievement surpassed the previous best record of 81 blows, achieved on two occasions, i.e production of 12,514 tons on 4th January 2026 and 12,818 tons on 27th March 2021.
Mr. Alok Verma, DIC, SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant, while visiting the SMS-2 complex on 3rd August 2026 extended his heartfelt appreciation to every department and individual associated with this landmark performance and urged the team to continue setting new benchmarks while maintaining the highest standards of Safety, Quality, and Operational Discipline. He further noted that this exceptional performance is the result of meticulous planning, seamless coordination, and resilient teamwork.
The visit was also attended by Mr. Tarun Mishra, ED(HR), Mr. Biswa Ranjan Palai, ED(Works), Mr. Anil Kumar, ED(MM), Mr. M. P. Singh, ED(Mines), Mr. Sudip Palchowdhury, ED(Projects), Mr. Rajesh Dasgupta, CGM(F&A), and several other senior officers. All the dignitaries shared their views and congratulated the team as well as the supporting departments for the outstanding achievement.
It is noteworthy that the successful commissioning of the state-of-the-art fourth Ladle Heating Furnace (LHF) in June 2026 and the fourth Continuous Caster in January 2026 has significantly strengthened SMS-II’s production capabilities and played a vital role in achieving this historic milestone.
This achievement stands as a testament to the collective commitment and relentless efforts of all supporting departments, including Operations, Mechanical and Electrical wings of SMS-2, Blast Furnace, Oxygen Plant, Production Planning and Control, Research & Control Lab, Traffic & Raw Material, Computer and Information Technology, Instrumentation and Automation, Calcining Plant-2, Flux & Refractory, and Material Recovery Department. The dedication, collaboration, and perseverance demonstrated by every team member were instrumental in making this success possible.
