SAIL Rourkela Steel Plant Signs Contract for Installation of 2 MTPA Pellet Plant

In a significant step towards enhancing operational efficiency and resource utilization, SAIL, Rourkela Steel Orissa Metaliks Private Limited Plant (RSP) has signed a contract with the Consortium of M/s Orissa Metaliks Private Limited and M/s Rosemary Sponge & Ispat Private Limited for the Installation of a 2 Million Ton per Annum (MTPA) Pellet Plant at RSP on a Construct, Operate and Maintain (COM) basis. The Contract was signed in the presence of Mr. Sudip Pal Chowdhury, ED (Projects), Mr. Pinaki Choudhury, CGM (Projects), Mr. S.S.Roychoudhury CGM (Maintenance), Mr. P.S.Kannan, CGM (EMD) and other senior officials of RSP, CET and Consortium of M/s Orissa Metaliks Private Limited & M/s Rosemary Sponge & Ispat Private Limited on 14th February at ED (Projects) Conference Hall of RSP..

The Letter of Award (LOA) for the project was issued on 16th January 2025, with the project slated for completion within 24 months from the effective date of signing. The Operation & Maintenance (O&M) contract is structured for a period of 20 years, with a provision to extend the contract for an additional 5 years on mutually agreed terms and conditions. The overall consultant for the project is CET, with PwC as the associated consultant.

The installation of the Pellet Plant will enable the efficient utilization of ultra-fines generated from mining, which are otherwise unsuitable for sinter making. The pellets produced will have a higher Fe (Iron) content (≥63%), significantly reducing slag rates in Blast Furnaces (BFs) compared to sinter (54%). Additionally, the combination of improved sinter quality and pellet utilization will enhance permeability, increase CDI (Coke Dust Injection), and facilitate oxygen enrichment, resulting in higher Blast Furnace productivity and lower coke consumption.

The installation of this Pellet Plant is a strategic move by RSP towards sustainability and enhanced operational efficiency. It is expected to play a crucial role in optimizing raw material usage, improving steel quality, and reducing production costs.
