SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has set a new benchmark in 150 tons steel ladle lining life by achieving an impressive ladle life of 210 heats in Steel Ladle No. 29 of the Steel Melting Shop-II (SMS-II). This achievement surpasses the earlier record of 206 heats, which was set in September 2020.
The milestone reflects the effective teamwork, sustained efforts and complete dedication of employees of the Refractory Engineering (Services) Department and SMS-II. It also highlights the continuous improvement in ladle refractory performance, operational discipline and maintenance practices at RSP. Notably, the steel ladle management set was supplied by M/s RHI Magnesita India Refractories Ltd. The ladle was lined on 15th October, 2025 and successfully completed 210 heats before being taken out of operation on 11th January, 2026.
The enhanced ladle life was achieved through optimized refractory selection, strict adherence to standard operating procedures during tapping and teeming, effective slag control practices, improved temperature management, timely maintenance interventions, and close coordination among the Operations, Refractories and Maintenance departments.
Achievement of such a high ladle life has led to reduced refractory consumption, improved ladle availability, lower operational downtime and enhanced safety, thereby contributing significantly to improved reliability and cost efficiency of steelmaking operations at RSP.
