SAIL Rourkela Steel Plant empowers underprivileged rural women through Sustainable Green Farming

Under a pioneering CSR initiative, SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has been implementing a unique project for the Economic Upliftment of Small Women Farmers through Sustainable Green Farming using Organic Farming Techniques. The objective of the integrated approach is to create an ecosystem that enables small women farmers from underprivileged rural communities to practice and prepare organic products. It also provides initial CSR support for production, along with hand-holding in marketing and sales. The benefits of the scheme has been extended to the women in the peripheral areas of RSP in the direct impact zones and the Resettlement Colonies of RSP for a long lasting sustainable effort towards a steady income and skilling/upskilling benefiting the families and hence the community at large.

It is noteworthy that the project of organic farming was launched by RSP in association with NIT Rourkela which aims at covering at least 700 farmers from periphery villages, mostly women in a period of 4 years. The women farmers are being trained in the basics of Organic Farming, its sustainability features, practical training for farmers on preparation of Vermicompost, Organic Manures, Biopesticides and Soil Health Management. The aim is to make people aware of and skilled in organic farming and to create a long-term plan for healthier, eco-friendly, and sustainable farming practices. The programme also includes mushroom cultivation training to provide an extra or main source of income and nutrition, along with financial and logistics support for building vermicompost pits and helping sell the products through dedicated vending zones.

The project combines various initiatives focused on organic farming, supported activities, and training for small women farmers in rural areas to empower them financially and build their capacity as trainers. It also aims to improve soil health, promote and market products like vermicompost, Jeevamrit, Beejamrit, mushrooms, organic turmeric, and bananas, and connect them with local consumers through partnerships with ORMAS, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, NIT Rourkela, the Department of Horticulture, and SHG groups.

Through this multi-pronged approach, RSP CSR is not only promoting sustainable agriculture but also enabling women farmers to become trainers and community leaders, ensuring long-term socio-economic and environmental impact.
