SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) emerged as the champion in the SPSB Inter Steel Chess Championship, held at Steel Club, Durgapur, from 20th to 22nd March. The tournament was organized by Alloy Steel Plant and witnessed participation from nine teams representing various Steel Plants like Bokaro Steel Plant, Bhilai Steel Plant, Durgapur Steel Plant, Alloy Steel Plant, IISCO, Burnpur, Salem Steel Plant, Rourkela Steel Plant and RINL.
The championship followed a Round Robin League format, where each team competed against every other team. RSP’s team, comprising Mr. Binayak Jena, Senior Manager (T&RM), Mr. N. N. Behera, Senior Technician (Coke Ovens), Mr. Gobardhan Behera, MOMT (SMS-II), Mr. I. C. Bhuyan, MOMT (Plate Mill) and Mr. S. K. Nayak, Master Technician (FMM) delivered an exceptional performance. The team was accompanied by their Coach cum Manager, Mr. P. C. Sahoo, Master Technician (Blast Furnace).
Demonstrating remarkable consistency and skill, Team RSP remained unbeaten from the very first round to the last. Their outstanding performance culminated in a decisive victory over Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP) in the final round, securing the championship title. Meanwhile, Durgapur Steel Plant was declared the runner-up. In addition to this Mr. Binayak Jena, Mr. Govardhan Behera and Mr. N N Behera also received individual Board prizes in first, second and third board respectively.
The prize distribution ceremony was presided over by Mr. S Subbaraj, ED (ASP), who handed over the trophies in the presence of other dignitaries.
