Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID), a Maharatna CPSU under the Ministry of Power, successfully acquired three Project Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) to enhance its capabilities in executing Inter-State Transmission Projects dedicated to renewable energy transmission. The newly acquired SPVs—‘South Olpad Transmission Limited,’ ‘Jam Khambhaliya Transmission Limited,’ and ‘Rajasthan IV H1 Power Transmission Limited’—were procured through a competitive Tariff Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) process, successfully outbidding various private sector participants. The estimated total investment for these projects amounts to ?8,769 Crores.
The South Olpad Transmission Limited project aims to establish a new 765/400/220 kV GIS sub-station along with accompanying 765kV and 400kV D/C Transmission Lines in Gujarat. This Inter-State Transmission System Project, slated for commissioning in 24 months, is part of the Khavda Phase-IV transmission scheme designed to facilitate the evacuation of an additional 7 GW of renewable energy from the Khavda RE park. Similarly, Rajasthan IV H1 Power Transmission Limited is tasked with constructing a new 765/400/220 kV sub-station at Kurawar and related transmission lines in Madhya Pradesh, aimed at evacuating 5.5 GW and 2 GW of renewable energy from key renewable energy zones. Meanwhile, Jam Khambhaliya Transmission Limited will enhance existing substation capacities in Gujarat, enabling the evacuation of power beyond 1.5 GW, with a target completion timeline of 21 months for most elements.
With these acquisitions, POWERGRID reinforces its commitment to augmenting India’s transmission infrastructure and facilitating the shift towards green energy. The projects will be constructed on a build, own, operate, and transfer (BOOT) basis, significantly contributing to India’s objective of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel generation capacity by 2030. As of 30th September 2024, POWERGRID operates 279 substations and over 1,78,195 circuit kilometers of transmission lines, with a transformation capacity of 537,276 MVA. By leveraging advanced technological tools and maintaining a remarkable average transmission system availability of approximately 99.8%, POWERGRID is well-positioned to support the national grid while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
