NEW DELHI. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman informed the Lok Sabha that total deposits in Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) accounts have reached 2,94,702 crore. A total of 57.78 crore accounts have been opened to date, with over 55 percent belonging to women and nearly 78 percent located in rural and semi-urban areas. This milestone reflects the significant expansion of financial inclusion across India, supported by the JAM trinity of Jan Dhan, Aadhaar, and mobile connectivity for seamless welfare delivery.
The Minister also shared progress on various social security and credit schemes aimed at empowering citizens. Notably, cumulative enrolments in life and accident insurance schemes like PMJJBY and PMSBY have reached 26.88 crore and 57.11 crore respectively. Furthermore, the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana has sanctioned over 39 lakh crore in loans to micro-businesses, while the Stand-Up India initiative continues to support SC, ST, and women entrepreneurs in establishing new enterprises across multiple sectors.
