New Diesel Engine Driven Air Compressor Commissioned in Power and Blowing Station of CPP#1

A state-of-the-art Diesel Engine driven Air has been successfully commissioned at the Power and Blowing Station (PBS) of Captive Power Plant#1 (CPP#1), SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP).

It is noteworthy that PBS plays a pivotal role in CPP#1, supplying cold blast to Blast Furnace #5 and generating power, which is critical for plant operations. The station comprises several vital installations, including three boilers, three turbo blowers for Blast Furnace #5, two steam turbine generators (STGs), and essential auxiliary systems like the PT Plant, DM Plant, Pump House, and Cooling Towers.

All control valves within PBS are operated using nitrogen sourced from TOP#2. A failure in this nitrogen supply could potentially bring PBS—and, by extension, Blast Furnace #5 operations to a complete halt. In light of this vulnerability, the commissioning of the new high-capacity Diesel Engine driven Air Compressor was both essential and long overdue.

This newly commissioned compressor is capable of independently fulfilling the instrument air requirements of PBS during any nitrogen supply failure or related emergency, thereby safeguarding uninterrupted operations and enhancing the reliability of both PBS and BF#5.

The inauguration ceremony was graced by Mr. S.M. Ali, Junior Engineer, CPP#1, in the esteemed presence of Mr. D.K. Roy, CGM (Power), Mr. N.C. Parida, GM I/C (CPP#1), Mr. B.V. Das, GM (CPP#1), Mr. Jaiveer Singh, GM (CPP#1), Mr. K.K. Behera, GM (CPP#1), Mr. D.K. Routray, AGM (Mechanical), and Mr. S.R. Panigrahi, Sr. Manager (CPP#1).
