A Mock Drill on Carbon Monoxide Toxic Gas Leakage was conducted by Coal Chemical Department of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant on 3rd December to mark the National Chemical Disaster Prevention Day. It was conducted at New CCD final Gas cooler area of Coal & Chemicals Department with an aim to enhance emergency preparedness to meet any eventuality arising out of hazardous chemical leakage. As part of statutory requirement, the exercise was done to assess the efficacy of onsite disaster management system of RSP and the personnel associated with it.
The entire group was divided into 3 teams viz. Combat team, Rescue team & Auxiliary team. All the teams performed well and completed the exercise within 18 minutes. Mr. B Nayak, GM, CCD played the role of the Site Incident Controller. The mock drill was witnessed by Mr. Abakasa Behera, GM (Safety), Mr. Kalyan Barla, GM (EMD) and many senior officers from CCD, HR & Safety.
At the end of the exercise, review was done by the Senior Officers who applauded the whole exercise and suggested further improvements in certain areas. The entire exercise was co-ordinated by Mr. M K Panigrahi, AGM (CCD) and DSO and Mr. R N Panigrahi, Deputy Manager (Safety) under the guidance of Ms Asha Kartha, CGM (Fire & Safety) and Mr B Nayak. The collective of Coal Chemicals and all associated departments took part in the exercise enthusiastically.
Notably such mock safety drills are being organised in strategic units of RSP from time to time to maintain a high level of preparedness for tackling any eventuality. The programme was coordinated by Mr. M K Panigrahi, DSO, CCD.
