NEW DELHI. Union Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh revealed India’s plan to deploy at least five indigenous small modular reactors (SMRs) by 2033, driven by the historic SHANTI Act of 2025, which opens the nation’s nuclear power domain to private sector investment. Under the Nuclear Energy Mission, the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) is actively constructing a 220-megawatt Bharat Small Modular Reactor (BSMR), a 55-megawatt variant, and a high-temperature gas-cooled reactor customized for hydrogen production.
