India And Bhutan Discuss Measures To Deepen Cooperation In Power Sector

NEW DELHI. India and Bhutan on Tuesday reviewed and reaffirmed their long-standing cooperation in the power sector, with discussions focusing on hydropower development, cross-border transmission, and future collaboration. Bhutan’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Lyonpo Gem Tshering, met Union Minister of Power and Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal, along with Minister of State for Power and New and Renewable Energy Shripad Naik, to explore ways to further strengthen bilateral energy ties.

The two sides discussed commercial optimisation of power generation from the 1,020 MW Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project and emphasised early commissioning of the 1,200 MW Punatsangchhu-I project. They also reviewed the roadmap for the proposed Sankosh Hydropower Project, development of cross-border transmission links up to 2040, and measures to streamline power scheduling during Bhutan’s lean generation months, reaffirming their commitment to deepening cooperation in the power sector.
