The Government of India has approved the 1,856 MW Sawalkot Hydropower Project on the Chenab River, making it the largest in Jammu & Kashmir. Located across Ramban, Reasi, and Udhampur districts, this run-of-the-river project has an estimated cost of around 31,380 crore rupees and a dam height of approximately 192.5 meters. The project received environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. Once operational, Sawalkot will significantly increase power generation, boost regional infrastructure, generate employment, and enhance connectivity. It aims to make Jammu & Kashmir a power-surplus region and contribute to India’s clean energy objectives. The project will join other Chenab-based stations like Baglihar, Dulhasti, and Ratle, but with the highest capacity in the Union Territory.
