The Energy Management Department (EMD) helped SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) to set new techno-economic benchmarks in the financial year 2024-25, marking a significant leap forward in the plant’s sustainability and operational efficiency efforts.
Through focused and strategic initiatives, RSP achieved its best-ever Specific Energy Consumption of 5.92 Giga Calories per Ton of Crude Steel (GCal/TCS), surpassing the previous record of 5.984 GCal/TCS set in 2023–24. This milestone reflects a major improvement in energy efficiency, further reinforcing RSP’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and promoting sustainable steelmaking practices.
EMD’s initiatives led to a marked improvement in LD Gas yield, reaching 75.89 Normal Cubic Metres per Ton of Crude Steel (Nm³/TCS), compared to 70.41 Nm³/TCS in the previous fiscal year. Similarly, the Coke Oven Gas yield rose from 318 Nm³ per Ton of Dry Coke (Nm³/TDC) in 2023–24 to 321 Nm³/TDC, demonstrating enhanced gas recovery and utilization.
In line with its commitment to infrastructure integrity and operational reliability, the department also undertook the replacement of 2760 metres of gas pipelines, ensuring continued safety and uninterrupted energy supply to critical consumers across the plant.
The department remains committed to continually enhancing energy efficiency through sustained efforts, contributing meaningfully to the plant’s overarching goals of sustainability, operational excellence, and cost-effectiveness.
