MUMBAI. In a landmark achievement for India’s defence manufacturing sector, Devi Nair has become the first woman General Manager in the 250-year history of Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL). Her appointment marks a significant milestone in the evolution of women’s leadership within public sector undertakings, particularly in traditionally male-dominated fields such as warship and submarine design. Over a distinguished career spanning 35 years, Nair has contributed extensively to complex naval projects, demonstrating that technical excellence, innovation and leadership are determined by capability and commitment rather than gender.
Nair’s elevation comes at a crucial time as MDL plays a central role in key national programmes, including the Project-75(I) submarine initiative aimed at strengthening India’s indigenous defence capabilities. Her achievement reflects a broader cultural transformation within the PSU sector, where merit-based leadership and diversity are increasingly being recognised and encouraged. With roots tracing back to 1774, Mazagon Dock recently celebrated its 250th anniversary with commemorative events supported by the Ministry of Defence, making Nair’s appointment a fitting milestone in the shipyard’s rich legacy and an inspiration for future generations of women engineers and defence professionals.
