NEW DELHI: Coal India Limited (CIL) has significantly exceeded its statutory CSR obligations, spending ₹7,276 crore against the mandated ₹5,795 crore between FY 2014-15 and FY 2025-26. Its annual CSR spending has grown from around ₹500 crore to nearly ₹1,000 crore. At least 80% of the allocation is spent within a 25-km radius of mines and establishments, with priority to project-affected areas, while over 90% of total CSR expenditure is directed to coal-bearing states.
CIL’s CSR activities also support major national priorities. The company was the largest CPSE contributor to the Swachh Vidyalaya Abhiyan, constructing over 50,000 toilets in government schools, and contributed to PM-CARES and COVID-19 relief efforts. Its initiatives included dedicated hospitals in Odisha and Chhattisgarh and oxygen plants under Mission Praana Vayu.
In health and education, CIL’s flagship programmes have delivered substantial benefits. NIRMAN has supported over 1,300 UPSC aspirants, while the Thalassemia Bal Sewa Yojana has enabled more than 1,000 bone marrow transplants. Under Nanha Sa Dil, over two lakh children were screened and more than 1,700 treated for congenital heart disease. CIL has also established major healthcare and education infrastructure, including a 500-bed medical college and hospital at Angul, a cardiac care centre at Jharsuguda, smart classrooms and ICT/STEM labs.
Beyond health and education, CIL’s CSR programmes promote skilling, livelihoods, sports and community development, benefiting over 48,000 people in the past four financial years. The Khelgaon Sports Academy has produced over 1,800 medals, including 15 international medals. Overall, CIL estimates that its CSR initiatives have touched 3.56 crore lives, with significant benefits for SC/ST communities, women and persons with disabilities, while contributing to SDGs related to health, education, gender equality, sanitation and poverty alleviation.
