An awareness programme on dengue prevention was conducted by the Public Health division of the Town Engineering Department of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) to mark National Dengue Day. The event took place at the Departmental Conference Hall in Sector-5 on 16th May 2025. It aimed at sensitising community volunteers and departmental personnel on measures to prevent the spread of dengue in and around the Steel Township.
Mr. B K Jojo, CGM (TE & Horticulture) presided over the session. Present on the occasion were Mr. S Naik, GM (TE-Civil), Dr. Deepa Lavangare, Deputy CMO (TE-Public Health) and other officers of the Department. 50 Captains of representing 30 Swachchata Swabhiman Groups took part in the event.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Jojo emphasized the vital link between good health, hygiene, and human productivity. Stressing that “prevention is better than cure,” he urged all Group Captains to take proactive leadership in driving dengue prevention awareness campaigns within their respective areas, to help avert any potential outbreak.
Dr. Lavangare was the guest speaker who made a detailed presentation highlighting the causes of dengue, preventive measures, and the importance of timely identification and elimination of breeding grounds, particularly in identified hotspot areas based on the previous year’s data.

Notably, the ‘Swachhata Swabhiman’ groups have been instituted by RSP to motivate residents of Rourkela Steel Township to participate in the cleanliness drive by adopting a particular area of the sectors preferably their own sector, including markets areas, slums, open spaces, lanes and quarters. More than 30 groups with around 400 members are regularly carrying out cleanliness activities under this scheme maintaining health and hygiene in their respective areas.
