Apollo Hospitals Performs Telangana’s First Allograft Tendon Augmentation for Shoulder Joint Preservation

Hyderabad, 24th April 2025: Apollo Jubilee Hills is proud to announce a significant milestone in advanced orthopedic care with the successful completion of Telangana’s first-ever allograft tendon (Achilles tendon) augmentation for lower trapezius transfer—performed by Dr. Prashant Meshram, Consultant Shoulder Surgeon. The complex surgery marks not only a first for the state but also a pioneering moment for Apollo Hospitals nationwide, being the first use of a tendon allograft for shoulder preservation across the group.

The surgery was performed on a 58-year-old active individual who had been living with chronic pain and significant weakness in his right shoulder for over six months following a fall. Diagnosed with a massive, irreparable rotator cuff tear compounded by early onset arthritis, the patient had explored multiple hospitals before choosing Apollo Jubilee Hills and Dr. Meshram for his care.

In what was a highly intricate procedure, Dr. Meshram performed an arthroscopic-assisted lower trapezius transfer, carefully augmented with an Achilles tendon allograft. The reconstruction also involved biceps tendon rerouting and subscapularis tendon repair—collectively aiming to restore shoulder mechanics and prevent the progression of arthritis. Post-operative imaging showed reversal of superior head migration, a critical indicator of restored joint alignment and function.

Behind the scenes, a skilled and compassionate team—comprising anesthesiologists, surgical techs, nurses, and operating room staff—played an instrumental role in ensuring the precision and success of this delicate surgery.

At Apollo Jubilee Hills, our purpose is rooted in restoring independence, dignity, and quality of life for every patient. This pioneering step in shoulder joint preservation strengthens our legacy of addressing complex musculoskeletal conditions with care, courage, and clinical excellence.
