India To Make Five Small Nuclear Power Reactors Operational By 2033

India small modular reactors by 2033

NEW DELHI. Union Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh revealed India’s plan to deploy at least five indigenous small modular reactors (SMRs) by 2033, driven by the historic SHANTI Act of 2025, which opens the nation’s nuclear power domain to private sector investment. Under the Nuclear Energy Mission, the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) is actively constructing a 220-megawatt Bharat Small Modular Reactor (BSMR), a 55-megawatt variant, and a high-temperature gas-cooled reactor customized for hydrogen production. The initiative serves as a pivotal bridge in India’s strategic roadmap to ramp up its current nuclear capacity from 8.78 gigawatts to nearly 22 gigawatts by 2031–32, laying the ground for an ambitious 100-gigawatt capacity goal by 2047.PIB
