NEW DELHI. Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly defended the government’s record on Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) during a session in the Rajya Sabha, asserting that sustained reforms have transformed these entities into record profit-generating institutions and key drivers of the Make in India initiative. He criticized the previous Congress-led governments for mismanaging and weakening PSUs, accusing them of politicizing these institutions and using protests and agitation tactics to incite unrest among employees. Modi emphasized that earlier regimes lacked the control and intent to strengthen PSUs, which hampered their growth and contribution to the economy.
Highlighting the achievements of his administration, Modi stated that a culture of continuous, reform-driven governance has revitalized the PSU sector, leading many enterprises that were once struggling to report their best-ever performances and record profits. He pointed out that these public sector firms are now acting as catalysts for domestic manufacturing, generating employment, and contributing significantly to India’s economic growth. The Prime Minister also noted their expanding global footprint, with Indian PSUs securing international contracts and participating in development projects across various countries, thereby showcasing India’s strength on the world stage.
Concluding his speech, Modi criticized the Congress for betraying public trust, including that of farmers, in the past. He asserted that the current government has restored credibility, efficiency, and high performance within the public sector ecosystem. Calling the current phase a milestone in India’s 25-year development journey, Modi emphasized that the resurgence of PSUs reflects a broader economic transformation and a renewed confidence in India’s growth prospects.
