Bhuj: In a significant boost to India’s clean energy vision, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone and dedicated key renewable energy transmission projects of Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID, worth ₹39,300 crore in Gujarat. These projects are set to enhance the state’s transmission infrastructure and support large-scale evacuation of renewable energy from the Khavda Renewable Energy (RE) Park. Present at the event were Union Minister of Power Shri Manohar Lal, Chief Minister of Gujarat Shri Bhupendrabhai Patel, POWERGRID CMD Shri R. K. Tyagi, Director (Projects) Shri Vamsi Rama Mohan Burra, EDs Shri Rajesh Kumar and Shri V. S. Bhal, along with other senior officials.
The Prime Minister dedicated the “Transmission Network Expansion in Gujarat to increase its ATC from ISTS Part-C” project, implemented by POWERGRID at a cost of ₹186 crore. This project will strengthen the transmission network in the Banaskantha region and facilitate the flow of renewable energy from Khavda RE Park to districts like Patan, Palanpur, Mehsana, and surrounding areas.
He also laid the foundation stone for two major projects: the ₹4,200 crore “Transmission System for Evacuation of Additional 7 GW RE Power from Khavda RE Park – Phase-III Part B” by POWERGRID Vataman Transmission Limited, and the ₹35,000 crore “Transmission System for Evacuation of Power from Potential RE Zone in Khavda – Phase-V Part A” by POWERGRID West Central Transmission Limited.
These projects include establishing a switching station at Vataman and an HVDC transmission line of 1200 km from Khavda to Nagpur, enabling the evacuation of 6 GW of green energy.
These transformative inter-state transmission projects are crucial for meeting India’s ambitious target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy by 2030. They will ensure seamless integration of renewable energy into the national grid, significantly advancing the country’s energy transition. As of 30th April 2025, POWERGRID has commissioned and operates 283 substations, 1,80,239 circuit km of transmission lines, and 5,64,961 MVA of transformation capacity. Leveraging advanced technology, automation, and digital solutions, POWERGRID has consistently maintained transmission system availability of over 99.85%.
