In a remarkable display of medical expertise and teamwork, a team of skilled doctors at Ispat General Hospital (IGH), under SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), successfully performed a highly challenging thyroid surgery on Mrs. Seemanjali Nandi, a 34-year-old woman and wife of an RSP employee, who had been suffering from a massive anterior neck swelling (thyroid) for the past three years.
Diagnosed with diffuse colloid goitre, Ms. Nandi had approached the Surgical OPD with visible discomfort and functional issues caused by the swelling. After thorough clinical assessment and counseling, the patient was advised to undergo surgical intervention. A series of pre-operative investigations including CT scan of the neck and anesthetic evaluations were conducted meticulously to ensure a smooth and safe procedure.
She was admitted as an elective case on 24th April, 2025, and the surgery was successfully carried out by an expert team of surgeons led by Dr. J. R. Sahoo, Chief Consultant, along with Dr. M. K. Panigrahi and Dr. M. K. Pradhan, both Additional Chief Medical Officers. The anesthesia team, headed by Dr. Smita Kujur, Senior Consultant, played a critical role in ensuring patient safety throughout the operation.
Given the large size and vascular nature of the thyroid mass, the procedure presented significant surgical challenges—particularly in preserving the nerves controlling the voice and protecting other vital structures in the neck. With exceptional precision and coordination, the team managed the surgery without complications, achieving outstanding results.
Post-surgery, Ms. Nandi was shifted to the Female Surgical Ward and kept there for five days. Her recovery was uneventful, and she was discharged in stable condition—with a relieved smile and gratitude on her face. Her family members expressed heartfelt thanks to the dedicated doctors and staff of IGH for their professionalism, care, and commitment.
