9 Years of PM Modi Government: When poverty meets power with ‘Saubhagya’ of Har Ghar Bijli

The Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government completed its ninth anniversary in power on May 26, the day when the Prime Minister took oath for the first time in 20214 and the second term on May 30, 2019, rolling out his vision of Sabaka Sath, Sabaka Vikas with the mission of “Less Government, More Governance” — an effort to provide a citizen-centric approach to empower people of India. Under the stewardship of PM Modi, India has witnessed several developments for the welfare of the people and the country. From forex reserve to Jan Dhan Yojana, fastest economy to the fastest connectivity, infrastructure boost to Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana, and from Har Ghar Jal to Har Ghar Bijli (Saubhagya Scheme or Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana): India has put up many milestones on the landscape of building the nation of USD five million economy under the leadership of the PM Modi government.

In the journey of making India a superpower nation, the power and renewable energy sector has played a pivotal role in the tryst with the historic achievements of the Modi government’s nine-year stint. From rural electrification to UDAY (Ujwal DISCOM Assurance Yojana) of the nation, India is on the fast track in the Green Energy Corridors to script the sustainable growth story of the country. Here is a sneak peek into the nine major breakthroughs during the nine years of the PM Modi government (2014-2023).

Power for All

The government launched the “24×7 Power for All” initiative, aiming to provide uninterrupted power supply to all households, industries, and commercial establishments. This initiative focused on expanding generation capacity, strengthening transmission infrastructure, and improving distribution systems to bridge the demand-supply gap. The Power for All program significantly improved the reliability and quality of power supply in the country.

Saubhagya Scheme

Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana or Saubhagya Scheme aims to provide free electricity connections to all households in the country. Under this initiative, millions of households were connected to the power grid, ensuring access to electricity for every Indian home. The scheme played a vital role in improving living standards, healthcare facilities, and educational opportunities in rural and urban areas.

Electrification of Villages

The government launched the “Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana” to ensure 100% electrification of villages. As a result, more than 18,000 unelectrified villages were connected to the power grid, bringing light to millions of rural households. This achievement significantly improved the quality of life in rural areas and provided new opportunities for economic development. The village electrification drive of the country has been recognized as one of the greatest success stories by the International Energy Agency.

Renewable Energy Capacity Expansion

According to a report by a top US research institute that highlighted PM Modi’s Atmanirbhar Bharat, India can have its energy independence through clean technology by 2047. The Modi government has decided to achieve the installation of 500 GW (gigawatt) of renewable energy capacity by 20230. As per the media report, the government has planned to grow EV sales in the country to grab the markets of 80 percent of two-and three-wheelers, 70 percent of commercial vehicles, and 30 percent of private cars. Additionally, the country witnessed substantial growth in wind energy installations and biomass power capacity.

International Solar Alliance

The International Solar Alliance (ISA), a group of 121 solar resource-rich countries, was launched by Prime Minister Modi at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris on November 30, 2015. The vision and mission of the International Solar Alliance is to mobilize resources for solar energy deployment, promote technology transfer, and establish a collaborative platform for solar-rich countries. The ISA has gained global recognition and has played a significant role in promoting solar energy worldwide. India has set a target of generating 40 percent of India’s total energy requirements in 2030, from non-fossil fuel-based sources. According to PM Modi, India is developing a new self-confidence of “Poverty to Power.”

UDAY

The UDAY (Ujwal DISCOM Assurance Yojana) scheme was launched to address the financial distress of state-owned power distribution companies (DISCOMs). It aimed to reduce the financial losses of DISCOMs and improve their operational efficiency. Through UDAY, DISCOMs were able to restructure their debt, reduce aggregate technical and commercial losses, and implement measures for sustainable financial management. The vision of the scheme aims at providing affordable 24×7 power supply to all.

Energy Efficiency Programs

The government implemented various energy efficiency programs to promote sustainable practices and reduce energy consumption. The “Perform, Achieve, and Trade” (PAT) scheme targeted industries and set energy efficiency targets, incentivizing them to adopt energy-efficient technologies and practices. The “Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All” (UJALA) scheme distributed energy-efficient LED bulbs at subsidized rates, resulting in significant energy savings and reduced carbon emissions.

Green Energy Corridors

To facilitate the integration of renewable energy into the grid, the government initiated the development of green energy corridors. These corridors encompassed the establishment of high-capacity transmission infrastructure to transmit renewable energy from resource-rich regions to load centers. The green energy corridors played a crucial role in enabling the large-scale integration of renewable energy sources.

Clean Cooking Initiatives

Recognizing the importance of clean cooking solutions, the government launched the “Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana” (PMUY). This scheme aimed to provide clean cooking fuel, particularly LPG (liquefied petroleum gas), to households living below the poverty line.
