Tripura Becomes First Northeast State to Sign MoU with Bhashini for Multilingual Governance

The Government of Tripura has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Digital India Bhashini Division (DIBD) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, on January 28, 2025. This marks a significant step in promoting regional languages in governance and enhancing digital participation for citizens. The MoU signing ceremony, held at Pragna Bhavan in Agartala, took place during the State-Level Workshop ‘Bhashini Rajyam’, inaugurated by Shri Pranajit Singha Roy, Hon’ble IT Minister of Tripura.

The workshop outlined Bhashini’s vision for digital inclusivity and showcased its AI-driven language solutions, including real-time translation, speech-to-text, text-to-speech, and voice-to-voice translation between Indian languages and English. Discussions focused on Tripura’s role in integrating these capabilities into governance and strategies to promote regional languages on digital platforms and government applications.

Many citizens in rural and tribal areas of Tripura struggle with language barriers, as most government digital platforms operate in English or Hindi. By enabling services in local languages, Bhashini will bridge this gap and make governance more inclusive. Its multilingual capabilities can be integrated with the CM Helpline, eVidhan, Kisan Sahayata App, e-District, and Amar Sarkar, improving citizen engagement. The CCTNS platform can also benefit from voice-based data entry and FIR translations, making legal and administrative processes more accessible.

Tripura is now the first northeastern state, the first in eastern India, and the eighth state in India to sign an MoU with Bhashini. It also joins a select group of states that have conducted focused workshops on multilingual governance. This pioneering move underscores Tripura’s commitment to digital inclusivity and leveraging technology for citizen-centric governance.

By integrating Bhashini into its e-Governance framework, Tripura aims to reduce the digital divide, enhance policy implementation, and strengthen regional identity. This initiative, backed by DIBD-MeitY, marks a transformative step toward a more inclusive, technology-driven administration, ensuring that Tripura’s linguistic diversity is embraced in governance.
