MEERUT. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated India’s first Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) and dedicated the entire 82-km Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor to the nation in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. Addressing a gathering, he described the launch as the beginning of a new era of world-class infrastructure for Uttar Pradesh and the country. The Prime Minister flagged off the Namo Bharat train and the Meerut Metro from Shatabdi Nagar Namo Bharat Station and also took a metro ride to Meerut South station, interacting with students and passengers. He said the project will make travel across the National Capital Region simpler, smoother and more convenient.

The Namo Bharat RRTS, with a design speed of 180 km per hour, connects Delhi with key urban centres such as Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Modinagar and Meerut, ensuring faster regional connectivity. The Meerut Metro, operating on the same infrastructure, will run between Meerut South and Modipuram at a maximum speed of around 120 km per hour, covering the stretch in about 30 minutes. The Prime Minister also inaugurated and laid the foundation for development projects worth around Rs 12,930 crore, stating that these initiatives will boost growth in Uttar Pradesh and contribute to the vision of a developed India.

Highlighting the expansion of metro services in the country, Mr Modi said that before 2014, metro networks were limited to five cities, but now they operate in more than 25 cities, making India’s metro network the third largest in the world. He said Uttar Pradesh is emerging as a major manufacturing hub and recently saw the foundation of its first semiconductor plant. The Prime Minister also criticised the Congress party over a protest by its youth wing at the India AI Impact Summit 2026, alleging that some political parties are unable to accept India’s progress. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said the projects launched will significantly benefit the people of the state.
