Sewage Treatment Plant of SAIL Rourkela Steel Plant enters 2nd phase of trial

The State-of-the-art Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) being set up by SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) for the Steel Township is expected to be commissioned in 3rd week of July. The equipment erection has been successfully completed, and the first phase of the trial operations was conducted in April 2025. The second phase of trial operations is set to commence shortly, paving the way for the final trial and full-scale commissioning.

Notably, the cutting edge facility is capable of handling 30 million liters per day (MLD) of sewage water. This major initiative, taken as per the advice of State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) aims at addressing environmental concerns and improving the quality of life in the Steel Township. The cost of the project is approximately Rs. 96 crore.

Notably, RSP has signed a comprehensive contract in June 2023 with a consortium comprising M/s B G Patel and M/s Oasis EPC Solution Limited for the above project. The contract covers the installation, commissioning, and a 5-year operation and maintenance agreement for the state-of-the-art facility. The STF will handle the entire sewage water generated in the Steel township. The cutting-edge sewage treatment plant will utilize the latest Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) technology for water processing.

It is noteworthy that RSP has undertaken the initiative to completely overhaul the sewage treatment system, reiterating its commitment to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all residents of the RSP Township.

The flagship project is being executed by the Project Department of RSP under the leadership of Mr. Sudip Pal Chowdhury, ED (Projects). Messers Mecon Ltd. is the Consultant of the project while the user departments are Town Engineering and Town Services. The work is being executed by the dedicated team of project comprising Mr. D K Sahoo, CGM (Projects), Mr. S K Dash, GM (Projects) and Mr V K Yadav , DGM (projects). The Coordinating team of the project comprises of Mr B K Jojo CGM (TE and Horticulture), Mr. T G Kanekar, CGM (TS &CSR),  Mr. Mangal Oram, GM, Town Engineering (Water Supply), Mr. B Malik, GM (CSR), and Mr. Sanjay Deo, GM (Town Services).

This ambitious endeavor signifies SAIL’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship. The revamped sewage treatment infrastructure is expected to enhance the quality of water resources, reduce pollution, and create a healthier and better environment.
