In a meaningful step towards sustainable environment, livelihood and rural development, SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has developed a fruit orchard on private land under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. The project, that spans the period from 2022 to 2025 and is being implemented in partnership with SEWAK, Sundargarh, intends to transform underutilized land into a productive, income-generating asset.
The plantation was carried out on the land of Mr. Lalit Kullu, a member of the Scheduled Tribe community and a resident of Barilepta village in Nuagaon block. 270 fruit-bearing plants—including premium mango varieties like Dusheri, Langda, and Baiganpalli have been planted in over 20,234 square meters of land. The orchard is further enriched with 350 border crops such as Teak, Neem, Jamun, and Karanj to enhance biodiversity and provide long-term ecological and economic benefits.
The site is protected with steel welded wire mesh fencing with RCC poles, safeguarding the plantation from stray cattle and other threats. The initiative also promotes organic farming practices through the use of organic fertilizers and neem oil, ensuring sustainable and environmentally friendly cultivation.
Expressing his gratitude, beneficiary Mr. Lalit Kullu shared, “I am thankful to RSP for this wonderful support. This orchard will not only improve the environment but also offer my family a reliable source of livelihood in the years ahead. Earlier, this land was unused—now it is full of life and hope.”
The initiative aims to bring about inclusive growth and environmental stewardship by empowering local communities, encouraging sustainable land use, and creating opportunities for long-term livelihood enhancement.
