Reaffirming its commitment to sustainability and taking a significant step toward a cleaner and healthier work environment, SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has commissioned an innovative Industrial Vacuum Dust Cleaning System at the Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) Shop of Steel Melting Shop-II (SMS-II). The system was launched by Mr. Atanu Bhowmick, Director In-Charge (DIC), RSP, during a program organized on 20th September 2024 as part of the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ campaign. The event was attended by Mr. Tarun Misra, ED (HR) with additional charge of ED (Projects), Mr. Alok Verma, ED (Mines), and Mr. A. K. Behuria, ED (Finance & Accounts), along with several Chief General Managers, senior officers, and a large number of employees.
The newly commissioned system is designed to efficiently remove dust from the shop floor, structures, and roof platforms using advanced vacuum suction technology. This innovative solution not only improves cleanliness but also enhances the overall quality of life for both employees and visitors.
Equipped with powerful suction capabilities, the system can extract even the finest dust particles and larger debris, significantly reducing the need for manual cleaning. The vacuum units operate on energy-efficient 3-phase electric power and are integrated with a network of pipes strategically installed throughout the shop, from ground level to the roof. By effectively removing dust, the system contributes to a healthier work environment, helping prevent the spread of airborne diseases and reducing the risks associated with dust and pollution, thereby promoting safety and well-being. The system is scalable and designed to handle even the most heavily polluted areas, including the shop roof. After its successful commissioning in the BOF Shop, the system is expected to be extended to other areas of SMS-II as needed.
Developed under the leadership of Mr. T. P. Sivasankar, CGM (SMS-II), the project addresses the growing need for improving workplace ambience and implementing sustainable, efficient waste management systems. Unlike traditional cleaning methods, which are time-consuming and labor-intensive, this vacuum suction technology provides a more effective and eco-friendly solution. It ensures swift removal of dust and debris across the BOF Complex at SMS-II.
Later the employees and the contract labour of SMS-II took a swachhata pledge to mark the occasion.
The project commissioning and launch were coordinated by Mr. Ajit Kumar Das, GM In-Charge, SMS-II (Operations), and Mr. Akhila Chandra Moharana, DSO, SMS-II.
