In a significant step towards sustainable mining and reduction of carbon footprint, Odisha Group of Mines (OGOM) of SAIL has entered into a strategic partnership with GAIL Gas Limited to explore the use of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as an alternative fuel in its Heavy Earth Moving Machinery (HEMM). A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on 31st March, 2026 between OGOM, CMLO, SAIL and GAIL Gas Limited at the Mines Department, Rourkela.
The MoU was signed in the presence of Mr. M.P. Singh, ED (Mines-OGOM) and Mr. Anil Kumar, ED (MM) of Rourkela Steel Plant, Present on the occasion were CGM (Maintenance), Bolani Ores Mines and other senior officials associated with OGOM operations.

GAIL Gas Limited was represented by Mr. M Zafar Khan, CGM (Marketing), Mr. Ashish Mittal, GM (CGD), Mr. G. Ankhaiya, GM & OIC, Rourkela and Mr. Kani Balan, Senior Marketing Officer.
The initiative aims at minimizing diesel consumption, improving fuel efficiency and promoting eco-friendly operations in line with SAIL’s vision of adopting green mining practices.
The MoU establishes a framework for cooperation between OGOM and GAIL Gas Limited to explore the feasibility and integration of LNG as a cleaner and more efficient fuel for OGOM’s logistics and mining fleet. This will help OGOM to strengthen and adopt environmentally responsible mining practices and contributing towards SAIL’s sustainability goals.
