SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), continues to make a positive impact in the lives of rural communities through its CSR initiatives. In the quaint village of Nuagaon, in the periphery area of Rourkela, a group of determined women have stepped into a new phase of life through the Kantha stitching and fabric painting workshop, organised as part of RSP’s CSR initiative. With needles and threads, they’re weaving their way to financial independence and self-confidence.
The CSR department of RSP has been a driving force behind this initiative, of imparting valuable skills and fostering entrepreneurship and self-reliance among rural women.
Under the guidance of Ms. Maitreyi Dhar, a dedicated trainer, these women have learned around 16 intricate stitches and various fabric painting techniques, including the beautiful Sohrai painting method. Their fingers dance on the fabric, stitching stories of hope and resilience.
Mr. Umesh Kumar, the coordinator, plays a vital role in facilitating this opportunity, ensuring the women receive the support they need. Ms. Munmun Mittra, GM-In charge, CSR, and Ms. Richa Sudhiram, Deputy Manager CSR, have also been instrumental in counselling the women on the process and exploring future possibilities.
“I tutor primary school children in the evening, and stitch late at night after putting my kids to sleep.” says Sapna Kumari, a trainee, while, Grace Topno, a trained beautician, says, “I have my own beauty parlour. Balancing stitching and painting while running a beauty parlour is challenging, but one can have more than one passion, right?”
As they stitch and paint, these women are creating stunning pieces of art on bedsheets, sarees, kurtis, pillow covers, and handkerchiefs – that reflect their lives and stories. The Kantha workshop has become a beacon of hope, empowering them to take charge of their lives and forge a brighter future.
Their journey is a testament to the power of skill development and empowerment, inspiring others to follow in their footsteps. SAIL RSP remains committed to nurturing and supporting such initiatives, driving positive change in the community.
