SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) presented merit-based scholarships amounting to Rs. Rs. 11.38 lakhs to 566 students from peripheral villages under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.
A function was held on 19th April, 2025, at the Institute for Periphery Development (IPD) of CSR Department, in which symbolic cheques were handed over to 20 students who attended the ceremony. Mr. G.S. Das, CGM (Internal Audit) presented the dummy cheques to the students, while the money is being transferred online to the account of all the beneficiaries. Present on the occasion were Ms. Munmun Mittra, GM In-Charge (CSR), Mr. T B Toppo, AGM (CSR), Ms. Satyabhama Behera, ABEO (Bisra) and Ms. Silvia Ekka, ABEO (Lathikata).
The scholarships were awarded to Class 7 and Class 10 students, from Upper Primary and High Schools of Nuagaon, Bisra, Kuarmunda, and Lathikata Revenue Blocks, Model Steel Villages, and Resettlement Colonies. Students were selected based on academic performance over two years. First, second, and third position holders among boys and girls of each school received amounts between Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 3,000 towards their educational expenses.
Among the recipients was Priyanka Beda of Jadakudar, now a Class 12 student, who shared how the scholarship eased her family’s financial burden. “I come from a farmer family, and my parents have struggled with working extra hours, and even sacrificing all they have to fund my education. This support is a huge relief for my family,” she said.
Through initiatives like these, the RSP continues to play a pivotal role in bridging educational inequities and empowering the youth of its peripheral regions.
The event was coordinated by Ms. Richa Sudhiram, Manager (CSR) and Mr. Benedict Ekka, Sr. Field Assistant (CSR).
