The enterprising employees of Raw Material Handling Plant (RMHP) of SAIL of Rourkela Steel Plant have successfully designed, fabricated and implemented a Detachable Mono Channel Hoist in the Fire Fighting Pump House. This innovative solution, capable of handling loads up to 1000 kg, aims to simplify the maintenance and shifting of motors and pumps in the pump house, ensuring operational efficiency and safety.
On 17th January 2025 Mr. Atish Chandra Sarkar, CGM (Iron) formally inaugurated the Detachable Mono Channel Hoist. Present on the occasion were Mr. Jaydeep Sethy, GM In-charge (RMHP), Mr. Madho Banra, GM(Mechanical), Mr. B. Prabhakar Shende, GM – Operations), Mr. Manoj Kumar Giri, GM (Electrical), Mr. Prasanna Kumar Naik, GM, Mr. Prasenjit Ray, DGM and other Officers and employees of the Department. The team led by Mr. Prasenjit Ray, DGM RMHP (Operation) has developed the detachable mono channel hoist.
Notably, the fire-fighting pump house plays a critical role in ensuring safety during emergencies, and keeping the pumps and motors operational at all times is paramount. Since its inception, maintenance activities in the pump house have been a major challenge due to space constraints and an unsuitable hoist position for lifting pumps. Maintenance personnel have often struggled with shifting heavy equipment, requiring extensive manpower, time, and effort. Moreover, the involvement of multiple individuals in maneuvering such equipment in tight spaces increases the risk of accidents.
The hoist enables efficient and safe shifting of critical equipment with minimal manpower. Only two individuals can now accomplish the task in a short time, significantly reducing effort and time. A key feature of the hoist is its detachability, allowing for quick dismantling within 10 minutes, making it portable and adaptable for other locations as well.
This unique technique, marks a significant milestone in the maintenance operations of older pump houses in RSP many of which were commissioned more than 20 years ago. The innovation eliminates the traditional issues of material handling and ensures a safer working environment.
